About the book
Tales by Moons- light: Stories from before the Great Melt is a collection of seven "old time" stories (much like fairy tales, but without the fairies) from a distant two-mooned planet called Urth. Follow the adventures of a diverse set of protagonists who face daunting challenges and emerge victorious. The tales are magical and fantastical, while also being rich in "real" science. They’re designed to raise scientific literacy in kids, even those who are science shy. From teaching kids about the amazing Universe and their place in it, to demonstrating why diversity makes us collectively strong, this book is great for author school visits, and meeting Next Generation Science Standards in an accessible, imaginative way.
I wrote the book with middle grade kids in mind, but it can be read aloud to children as young as 7 or 8. In the grand tradition of fairy tales from Hans Christian Anderson, (The Ugly Duckling and The Emperor’s New Clothes), Joseph Jacobs (The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears), and Dr. Seuss (The Sneetches, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax), each story tale carries a timeless moral, as relevant to kids on Earth as to kids on distant Urth!
About the Illustrations
I’m a folk artist as well as a children’s book author, so it was a “no brainer” that I’d draw the illustrations for the book. Other than the book cover, which was created by The Book Designers, the interior illustrations are my own. Here are some examples, from different tales, to give you a flavor of my drawing style. My goal was to give them an “old time” feel, and since the interior of the book is black and white, the illustrations are as well.
